the business of modeling
Agency models are professional
models whom are represented by a legitimate modeling and talent agency.
Modeling and talent agencies work for the models whom they represent,
although many agencies cross the line and behave like they are the employer
of the models, which is wrong.
Modeling and talent agencies should only be used as one of many sources
of modeling jobs, and that is all. They should never try to manage models,
tell them what to do, or make them sign exclusive representation contracts.
Why would a model allow themselves to be limited in their career by being
dependent upon the agency for work?
In our opinion, an agency which manages a model is a working conflict
of interest, because the agency also works for the competition of the
models, whom are other models also represented bu the agency. Besides
that obvious conflict of interest, it’s also like an employee trying
to tell their employer what to do.
Models should only allow agencies to find and refer them to modeling jobs,
and that is it. This is the only way to ensure that the agency will be
ethical and professional, and will do their job. Agencies have no business
telling models what to do, managing them, selling them services such as
modeling portfolios and composite cards, and referring them to others
for services. Agencies are only supposed to make money by referring models
into jobs, and if models enforce this, the agencies will be forced to
work harder to do their jobs.
Never buy any services from anyone referred to you by an agency, as you
can never be sure that the agency is making money from the referral. This
is how modeling scams work, where an agency baits in models with the promise
of modeling work and instead sells them things or refers them to others
who sell them services. Also, to make sure that photographers are legitimate,
avoid photographers who are directly affiliated with agencies.
Agency models whom allow themselves to be completely dependent upon modeling
and talent agencies for work limit themselves, as they cannot compete
with professional independent models. This is especially true when the
independent models take the modeling jobs away from the agencies before
they can refer those jobs to their agency models. Also, keep in mind that
the agencies are aware that the independent models will book work without
them, and that they will no want to be cut out of the loop and lose on
commission; as a result, the agency-dependent models are further cut off
from work because they agency will work harder to make sure that the independent
models book these jobs through them before they do so on their own. After
all, it’s not like the agency models are going anywhere, is it?

agency way is no longer the only way of having a professional career as
a model. There is no arguing against common-sense and proven business
practices. Modern professional models think for themselves, network, and
book work both as independent models and by using agencies as one of many
sources of jobs. This is the future of the modeling industry.
