If you are a business which
is looking to book models or photographers into jobs to produce content
for your advertising and marketing, know this:
You do not have to go through a modeling and talent agency to find, and
book, legitimate professional models and photographers.
You do not have to be dependent upon the agency middleman.
You save money, even paying models and photographers the full rates that
they deserve, by cutting out the modeling and talent agency middleman
because you do not have to pay agency fees, which often are as much as
20% of what you pay the talent. You already knew that, however.
Being dependent upon a middleman is not smart business. The fewer middlemen,
the better, and the more efficient your work is. Hiring talent directly
is better. Some of you may think that having peace of mind going through
an agency to book reliable, professional talent into your jobs is dealing
with the agencies and paying those fees, but it is a false economy, and
it is bad business.
Agencies are middlemen whom work FOR the talent who they represent. That’s
it. Agencies try to overstep their bounds, however, and act as if they
run the entire industry. They even try to dictate terms to you, their
other client.
If you accept the modeling and talent agencies running you, and allow
your business to be dependent upon agencies, you subscribe to a close
market, which is limited, and feed into the vicious cycle of higher costs
and unethical conduct that the modeling industry is infamous for. As a
business owner, you’re smart enough to realize that an open market
is superior to a closed market, especially when you are looking for services,
as competition opens up the market. You may choose to be dependent upon
the agencies, but your competition may not, and as a result, their advertising
and marketing projects will be more cost-effective, and effective, than
yours are. You want to be able to compete, don’t you?
Sure, the agency will tell you things in order to frighten you into sticking
with their way of doing things. They will tell you lies such as their
models are more reliable, and professional, than independent models are.
If an agency tells you this, have them guarantee it writing. Don’t
be surprised when they don’t. What good is are words when they don’t
back them up with action? Also, how can they guarantee models whom they
work for? It’s not like they are the employer of the models whom
they represent, although agencies, historically, are notorious for being
unethical by acting as the employer of the models.
Independent models (and photographers, for that matter) have a higher
standard to adhere to. If they demonstrate that they have invested into
their career, and their portfolios show that they have relevant, professional,
experience, where is the risk? Besides, aren’t you experienced enough
to be able to evaluate prospective talent in a cost-effective manner before
you work with them? Regardless of there being and agency in the loop or
not, you still have to interview the talent for the job, so you might
as well book independent models and photographers.
Don’t let a modeling and talent agency insult you by telling you
that you can’t screen talent as well as they can. Remember the last
time when you contacted an agency for models, and they spammed you models
which were not what you asked for, as well as a few that you were looking
for? What good is an agency when they give you cattle calls?
The agency way is not the only way. You will also find that most independent
models and photographers are MORE professional and reliable than their
agency-referred counterparts, as independent models and photographers
are more involved with their careers, as well as more experienced than
their limited agency-only counterparts.

The
agency way is no longer the only way of having a professional career as
a model. There is no arguing against common-sense and proven business
practices. Modern professional models think for themselves, network, and
book work both as independent models and by using agencies as one of many
sources of jobs. This is the future of the modeling industry.
